How does Handshake work?

Hey guys just wondering- when an open position on Handshake directs you to apply on both Handshake and the firms career page, do firms review your Handshake profile or do they only review your official app submitted through their careers page?

My experience (from talking to recruiters) with firms is that they view the version on their official website. Handshake is just a middleman to get people to apply (who otherwise probably would have never applied). We have handshake and I am not a huge fan of it.

Handshake is usually just a resume drop box. It's a great tool for on campus recruiting, but if they ask you to apply on their website, they will most likely only review that. Handshake profile strength doesn't matter, normally.

So I actually work in my university's career services department as my on campus job, so I think I can add some color here. Handshake, like people have already mentioned is basically just a job/resume aggregator. It's a bit like the common app for resumes, in that, when an employer checks a box they can blast it out across whatever college career services center they would like. Some have the LinkedIn-type plugin enabled so the applications/resumes flow directly into their recruiting database. However, thats probably 0.0001% of all companies that post jobs on Handshake. So I always tell people to always always submit applications in both Handshake and the careers section of their website, if it's available (if its not never hurts to fire off an email to HR or a LinkedIn contact, maybe indirectly network along the way). That way if your resume/application are in both places your ass it at least covered. Hope that helps a bit.
