How does one become a quantitative analyst?

I am a graduate student currently doing my studies in Economics. I have been exploring what career options do I have after I graduate, and quantitative analyst seems to be the right track. However, I do understand that the industry is very competitive, and it might be hard for me to break in as I do not have quantitative skills compared to those Financial Engineering students. How do I make up the deficiencies that I will need in the quant analyst career? Looking to fill up all the deficient knowledge soon so I could land a summer internship in the industry before I graduate.

What are the exit opportunities also for a quantitative analyst?
