How hard to get return offer
In a pretty chill group, generally how difficult is it to get a return offer? I know all banks are different but do I just not have to be retarded or will I have to grind like a maniac?

Depends on if it's EB or BB. Some BBs have return rate quotas. Most EBs don't. When I summered with my EB group the people who did not get returns genuinely messed up (e.g. bad attitude, not available during reasonable working hours, etc).
Do you know how MM return rates compare?
Spoke to an analyst at the bank I’m interning at in the MM space and they said everyone who deserves a return offer will get one.
Varies by bank and group, but return rates are quite high in IB. Better the devil you know and have tested for 3 months, right?
If you show up, are willing to work and learn, easy to be around, and don't complain if they work you long hours you're totally fine. There are a handful of groups out there with low return rates, but those cut typically have a problem (clear culture/teamwork issue, chronically left early, unresponsive to emails). Show up, work hard, be a sponge and you'll be good to go
I once had an MD mark me as nonresponsive since my Skype would show me as away during the day for 5 - 10 min stretches once every few hours as my Wifi would reboot and kick me out of the remote desktop (no company computer as an intern). Probably should have communicated this to them, but the MD themselves never used Skype / were offline themselves 80% of the time and only began messaging me on it once it started showing me as away. No return offer though I was always responsive to email as it came through my phone on data.
Sounds like you dodged a cultural nightmare honestly
do you think that this would be an approp story to tell as to answer why I didn't get a return offer in ft interviews
No and honestly only because I wouldn't believe it if someone told me, I'd assume there was some other reason
I'd just say it wasn't a good fit for you, or they only had X spots and being virtual made it more challenging for you to stand out.
