How important are internships for IB/CB/CorpDev/VC/PE?

I’ve done my uni part time while working full time in private wealth for big 5 in Canada. So I’ve never considered applying to internships before.

Looking to change careers from WM to corp finance and I’m finding out that a good amount of FT offers are given to summer analysts. Are internships a huge part of the selection process or would my years of experience in WM give me an edge?

Thanks. Pretty much my thoughts… but it’s like a catch 22: how can I show interest and experience in related roles when I can’t get related roles with my current experience. I’m assuming I will need to heavily network in my case
