How long into hated first job to switch/quit?
Hi,
Started a new job about 2 months ago and I hate everything about it - the work, the culture, the people, etc. (I wouldn't say hate. just bored with the work already and not friendly with coworkers). I was just wondering how long to go before I should consider looking for a new job or just straight up quitting. I'm not sure how 2 months of a job looks on a resume when applying at other places. Also, this is my first real job.
Similar situation for me in regards to where I stand with my 1st job except I started 8 months ago. I realized both the work and people weren't a good fit for me relatively early on, but its definitely hard to get interviews/looks when you've only been at your first job for 2 months.
Lot of people here will say 12-18 months minimum (which is definitely ideal) to really start getting looks for other places, but I really started pounding the pavement after 6 months in regards to applications and networking. Its worked out pretty well in terms of getting interviews recently but definitely have noted traction in regards to application progress really began in the past few weeks.
It definitely sucks going into an environment/job that you really dislike everyday, but just try to be the best performer you can be at work and spend your free time trying to study, network, and apply for positions that may be of interest to you a few months down the road. Hope that helps
Thanks. That helped a lot and makes me feel better. I know the job I'm at is a good name/opportunity and great for my resume going forward so I plan to grind through it for now because I don't know if I'd get any better opportunities.
May I ask what you do to get through your job? Tips to staying positive and happy?
I just try to take initiative & add value on the simplest of tasks. I'm in a regional office in a group that hasn't had an analyst in a couple of years so its tough but there's always updates and projects you can try to find that are helpful to the team. Lot of times I'm left to my lonesome,, so I also take some free time to study for switching jobs.
I'm definitely not a good source as to staying happy/positive but I just try to grind through each day and as interviews have rolled in in recent weeks, I have begun to feel better. I've come to accept that I'm not a good fit in my current role/culture and motivate myself to work harder to end up in a better place/role
Gotcha. Anything in particular you're studying?
