How long to hear back?

I’ve been going through the lateral process at another bank for about a month now. I’ve had 4 interviews in total culminating in a 30 minute interview with a senior member of the team yesterday. Every single interview I’ve had so far has been extremely positive with 1 of my interviewers really going to bat for me and prepping me before each round.

In my final interview, the interviewer joined ~15 minutes late to a 30 minute interview and I don’t think I really got a chance to connect with her at all. Felt pretty rushed off the phone and didn’t seem very interested.

Been over 24 hours now and haven’t heard anything, including from the contact who I’ve been in  communication with the whole process. Safe to assume I’ve been dinged / it’s over?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the timeline for hearing back after interviews can vary significantly depending on the bank and the process. For lateral hires, the process can sometimes take longer, with some users reporting timelines of up to 3 weeks or more from the final interview to receiving an offer or rejection.

In your case, since it has only been 24 hours, it’s too early to assume you’ve been rejected. Many users have shared that responses can take a few days, especially if the decision involves multiple stakeholders. For example, one user mentioned waiting three weeks after being told they’d hear back in one week, only to receive an offer after following up.

Here’s what you can do: 1. Wait a few more days: It’s still early in the process, and banks often take time to finalize decisions. 2. Follow up strategically: If you haven’t heard back within a week, consider reaching out to your contact to politely inquire about the status of your application. Always call rather than email, as some users have found this more effective.

While the rushed nature of your final interview might feel discouraging, it’s not necessarily a dealbreaker. Decisions are often based on the overall impression from all interviews, and the positive feedback from earlier rounds could still work in your favor. Stay patient and proactive!
