How Many Times Should You Follow Up on a Networking Email?

I have seen mixed advice. Some people say to stop after 2-3 follow-ups, while others say continuing to follow up shows persistence and that you actually want to speak with the person. At the same time, I do not want to be annoying or keep clogging someone’s inbox.

Would appreciate any advice on what has worked for people.

okay, you are going to get a lot of different answers, but what I feel is this.

you have to try to make a guess on what kind of a person you are talking to, (I know some of them would be just names you have never seen before,) but do adopt few different techniques, for example few people would not mind a stranger guy asking once every 2 weeks, would not mind and would view it as a proof of interest and a signal. I know people who actually wait for 2 , 3 follow ups , to make sure they guy did not hit send to top 20 analysts or something like that.

Few people view repeated follow ups as a desperate move, but having said that, it should not discourage you, rule of thumb is this ( I heard a career counsellor say this, if it helps it helps) :
1st follow up between 1 to 2 weeks after initial conversation
2nd follow up 1 to 2 months from initial contact
3rd follow up, 3 to 6 months from initial contact
4rth follow up, if this contact is your golden ticket,

all the best
