How should college students be using LinkedIn?
What do you recommend college students (especially underclassmen) do on linkedin?
Just make a profile? Put it on their resumes? Follow companies? Post articles - or is that annoying?
Also, if you see a second degree connection who you would like to talk to or contact, do you ask the middle person to introduce you, or is it "okay" to just introduce yourself?
How I got my MM IB internship as a sophomore:
LinkedIn Search --> "School Name" + Investment Banking Industry i. bunch of people popped up from Boutique + MM + BB IB.
Listed down all the MM people (did not bother to talk to Boutique & BB folks)
Googled the name of the firm to get its number.
Called the firm to get the email address of the alum MD.
Emailed him.
Got response.
Set up coffee and all.
Got the internship.
Hit me up with any question(s).
I did a similar approach to the above post which landed me my current SA gig in the ER department of a MM IB as a freshman.
I joined my schools alumni page and just did a search for "investment" and got dozens of pages. I just scanned people for relevant occupations or positions and then cold emailed them after finding their email on the firms website.
In the case which landed me my internship the firm didn't list emails on their website, so I sent him an InMail and then he contacted me via his work email.

As an addendum to Ambani's post, you don't have to call the firm--use WSO's company database to get the email convention and tell the alum you found them through an alumni network

It seems like there's a lot of Linkedin advice here for people at non-targets or semi-targets, mostly to help people get their foot in the door and have someone look over their resumes. But what about targets? OCR means that someone is going to (theoretically) read whatever resume/cover letter/application you send. In this case, how do you guys use Linkedin to the best of your advantage?
The vast majority of advice on this site is geared towards non/semi-targets. Just a heads up.
Surely same methods are applicable..
If it's OCR (BB or other top companies), usually the hiring manager or the person who picks the resume will be from your school (VP or higher)... Try to contact students from previous years who found jobs through OCR, they will know that person...

Finding People on LinkedIn Most Likely to Network With College Students (Originally Posted: 02/18/2016)
So I'm interning in a new city (SF) this summer and want to build out my network as much as possible while I'm there. I'm trying to find people on LinkedIn in high finance who would be most likely to meet me for coffee, drinks, etc. In my past experience, those who are most willing to meet seem to be people who are extremely involved in the community or have very detailed profiles. I have yet to have a negative experience talking to someone who is very involved and throughly enjoys helping college students network and dispensing their wisdom to them. I find this extremely beneficial on my end and who doesn't love a good conversation?!
I've been setting my search criteria specific to the city for Financial Services, IB, and IM then search specific words that someone who is involved who have on their profile such as "mentor", "volunteer", or "board member". Another option would be to find some of the larger organizations in the city and looking up their board members. This would be extremely time consuming because then I'd have to find out who is actually in finance....
I'm not sure if there's an easier way to go about finding these quality people or if I should just scrap that idea and just wing it like usual, emailing like a mad man.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, use LinkedIn. You would be crazy to not use it. LinkedIn is a godsent networking tool.
