How To Go About Getting A Fall Internship (Repost)

I will be a sophomore this upcoming fall and I currently do not have a summer internship. I'm still doing productive stuff this summer (I think), I'll be taking summer classes that my school is offering for free due to corona and I'll be taking the SIE exam this summer.

Since I go to school in New York, I would like to get a fall internship during the semester, particularly for AM. How exactly do I go about this? Do I simply cold email smaller AM firms asking for a fall internship? I was thinking that I should network a lot this summer and then ask for an internship towards the end of the summer. Is this a good strategy?

Thank you for any advice.

This is a repost from last week in the AM forum but didn't get a lot of traction so I thought I repost it in the IB forum as it seems more active. And also, I am interested in getting an IB internship this fall, but I would prefer AM, so I guess this still applies to IB
