How valuable are MD referrals for graduates trying to break into IB FT

I am interested in pursuing IB Analyst positions for 2025 and am eager to understand more about the recruitment process. As an international student at a target university, I want to do my best to stand out. I'm targeting MM and large regional banks but I want to know how helpful this is generally.
