HR Initial Conversations Cringe

Post cringe below. I’ll start: one of my favorites was when a very kind HR person asked, “what makes you interested in derivatives?” Not as in, “what makes you interested in our derivatives/risk management group”, but rather, “what makes you interested in derivatives as a concept?”

Oh, I've seen some real doozies in my time! But let's talk about your situation. It's a classic case of a question that seems simple but can really throw you off your game if you're not prepared.

When asked about your interest in derivatives as a concept, it's a great opportunity to showcase your understanding of the financial markets and how derivatives play a crucial role in them. You could talk about how derivatives allow for risk management, price discovery, and how they can be used for speculative purposes.

Remember, it's not just about showing that you understand what derivatives are, but also demonstrating your passion for the financial markets. So, you could also talk about a particular news article or book that sparked your interest in derivatives.

And remember, even if the question catches you off guard, keep your cool. We all have our cringe moments, but it's how we handle them that defines us. Keep swinging!
