IB Professionals: What LinkedIn Messages Are You Responding To?

Hey All,

Networking on LinkedIn to IB folks is interesting. I work in wealth management, did my MBA in finance, yadda, yadda. I am looking to pivot. It is a long-term goal of mine.

I HATE to bother you all. I just imagine in between the hectic work you all have, the last thing you want to hear is about another random guy who wants to break into the field. So, my question to you is- What messages are you responding to if any? Is it all just a numbers game? Are you bothered that I want to network, get chatting, learn about one another and you can provide some advice in the right direction?

To give an idea about my message:

Hello {Name},

I am a recent MBA grad working in W/M. You have an impressive background! I am looking for some advice on the chance possibility of pivoting to IB. I would love to connect and learn more about your experience working in the industry.

I look forward to connecting!

Does that sound too spammy? lol.

Thanks Everyone!

- Joe

Hi Joe,

This is a thoughtful post and context. Speaking for myself, as you point out, I get dozens of messages (and I'm UK-based, so imagine it's even more in the US), and it's just not possible to help everyone and do the job I'm paid for. I don't like it, but that's the way it is.

The messages I respond to are usually (doesn't need to be "all of") those where (A) it's more tailored / personal, (B) they have some common background or interest (e.g. university), and (C) where I feel like I might have a chance of helping the person.

Also keep in mind that I'm speaking from a more senior perspective, which means I'm also juggling priorities like family more, and have less downtime (junior work far more hours but sometimes have a little downtime in the day waiting for comments, etc., whereas seniors should not have any free time). Also the threshold for (C) is different - I'm much further removed from what the life of an analyst is than, well, an analyst, and further also from the recruitment process.

Personal opinion, but I find the "You have an impressive background!" corny and a bit impersonal.

Good luck!

Thank you for the sound advice. I understand what you mean and I will search more for alumni and those from a common background like myself. I appreciate you taking the time on a Sunday evening. Cheers!

I wouldn’t reply if I got that message, no offense. My first thought would be “if IB was actually your long term goal, why didn’t you focus on recruiting for IB through the MBA program you just finished?”

I get LinkedIn messages + emails to my work email address almost every day from undergrad students, MBA students, and complete randos. Barely ever reply to them unless we went to the same school + they also served in the military like myself.

Recommend you try to just reach out to alumni who might be more inclined to help you. Or if you are doing wealth mgmt at one of the big banks in nyc, try to network with the folks who sit in the the IB groups at your bank. They would probably be more responsive.

Thanks for the advice. Well, actually, I would love your two cents. I did my MBA at a small private school in Malibu and they really gave me a good deal to do a 1 year extension to get my MBA. Needless to say, it wasn’t well thought out and only once I finished did I realize what I wanted to do and I didn’t utilize the resources provided to me so I’m in this boat. I don’t think there is a very responsible/mature way to tell that story to IB professionals.

Try going through your existing network to see if you know anyone that knows ppl that work in lower middle market or middle market banks in your current city that can make a warm connection for you.

Smaller banks have less structured hiring processes and are more likely to take on the risk of hiring you. They’d prob also want you to start as an analyst or even an intern though since you don’t have any IB experience and also not coming from a top mba program.
