IB SOPHMORE RECRUITING
Hi, currently a sophomore at a non-target school and have talked to around 50 analysts, and a few mds. I am wondering what you think is the best number of people to speak with before submitting an application. Trying to submit then as soon as possible. Thanks.
this isn't the right approach on a macro basis. if I told you the number as 79 convos would you schedule 29 more meetings? yes it's a numbers game but that doesn't mean email the whole directory at every bank. If you got on the phone with me and told me you spoke to 15 other people at my bank, I wouldn't be impressed. you need people to be vouching for you. I would bet (on a % basis) you barely have any who would. That isn't an attack on you. That's just the numbers. So you're doing the right thing be reaching out to people but focus on the quality not the quantity.
.
you've got the right approach. 2-3 per bank hit all of them for hedging purposes. even if bank doesn't work out keep them on a list and still follow up for FT
I do make valuable conversations, but trying to do as much as possible. Coming from a nontarget looking for MM, I feel as if I need to get my name out there as much as possible with as many valuable phone calls as possible - a few from each bank - 30 min personable calls - email follow-up.
I'm from non target at Tier 1 BB non diversity/nonfemale. AKA the bottom of the bucket. You need to establish relationships with 2-3 key players that are actively involved in hiring. I did not do this but I should have. Instead of asking to get referred. Ask to talk to the staffer. Even if they aren't in charge of recruiting. They will know who is. I used to think just talking to people and having the call go well would be enough. I was so so wrong. You need people in your corner and that doesn't just happen with 100+ people. Also an email follow up means shit. Get on the phone 4-5 times over a span of a few months.
