Ideal resume

Incoming freshman at Fordham - a non target

I applied as a finance major and ultimately chose it over a few other schools I got into (which were all non targets). What sort of stuff is appealing to IB recruiters, coming from a non target school? Besides the most widely known resume builders (clubs, internships), is there anything else that would give me an edge over other recruits to ultimately end up in a BB/EB?

For summers, I think of it as three buckets when I review - the must haves, the nice to haves and the extras/differentiators.

- Must haves - good GPA to signal work ethic/commitment, relevant coursework for a good foundation, clubs, case comps and the like to demonstrate interest in finance

- Nice to haves - prior stints in banking but not required. Relevant internships with exposure to corporate finance, markets or anything else that translates well to banking are ideal

- Extras/differentiators - I always take the time to read the extracurriculars or interests section. Every resume is top grades from a top school with all the right clubs etc. This is a way to differentiate from the pack with interesting hobbies or life experiences. I use this as a pseudo airport test without wasting time meeting a person. Financial modeling as a hobby or interest? Immediate ding for me. Black belt in taekwondo, climbed Kili for charity, wildlife photographer in your spare time? I'd be interested in a convo if all else checks out.
