If I can't secure a FT position in IB out of college, what is another job you'd recommend I look into going for?

I'm in college and my goal is to work FT in IB once I finish. I like that IB has good exit ops. What are other jobs to shoot for that open up doors for career growth? What else is out there that you would recommend? It would be a plus if the alternative job needs skills that are transferable from skills I picked up prepping for IB interviews.

I'd be happy to learn more about other lines of work that anyone would recommend I look into. Thank you.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, if you can't secure a full-time position in IB out of college, there are several alternative roles that can still provide strong career growth and transferable skills for a potential pivot into IB or other high finance roles later. Here are some recommendations:

  1. Big Four Transaction Services or Valuation Services: These roles involve financial analysis, due diligence, and valuation work, which are highly transferable to IB. Firms like Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG are great starting points.

  2. Corporate Development: Working in corporate development allows you to gain experience in M&A, strategic planning, and deal execution, which aligns closely with IB skill sets.

  3. Equity Research: This role involves analyzing companies, creating financial models, and providing investment recommendations. It’s a solid alternative with strong exit opportunities.

  4. Asset Management: Roles in asset management provide exposure to portfolio management, investment strategies, and client interaction, which can be a stepping stone to other finance careers.

  5. Boutique Investment Banks: Smaller firms often have less structured recruiting cycles, so networking and persistence can help you land a role here. These positions still offer valuable deal experience.

  6. Commercial or Corporate Banking: These roles provide exposure to credit analysis, client relationships, and financial structuring. They can serve as a platform to transition into IB later.

  7. Independent Valuation Firms (e.g., Duff & Phelps): These firms specialize in valuation and advisory services, offering skills that are directly applicable to IB.

  8. Strategy Consulting: Consulting roles at firms like McKinsey, BCG, or Bain can provide strong analytical and problem-solving skills, along with exposure to corporate strategy and operations.

  9. Public Finance: This niche area involves working on municipal bonds and public sector financing, offering a unique perspective on financial markets.

  10. Private Equity or Venture Capital Analyst Roles: While harder to break into directly, these roles can sometimes be accessible through networking or internships and offer excellent career growth.

Each of these roles leverages skills like financial modeling, analytical thinking, and client interaction, which you’ve likely developed while preparing for IB interviews. Additionally, they provide opportunities to build a strong resume and network, keeping the door open for a future transition into IB or other high finance roles.
