After over 6 years in corporate M&A and development—a career path that I thoroughly enjoyed—I took a leap in 2020 to start my own venture. Fast forward four years, and I'm now faced with the tough decision of potentially closing down my business and filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
Given this, I'm turning to this community for guidance: What impact could filing for Chapter 7 have on job prospects in corporate development, M&A, or the finance industry more broadly? I had to shut down my own firm a while back and had the exact same anxiety about going back to corporate. From my experience, unless you need specific FINRA licenses or handle direct client funds, most M&A hiring managers are pretty understanding of a failed venture. They respect the entrepreneurial attempt.
The biggest headache for me was figuring out the personal guarantees on the business loans. I ended up using Director First to navigate the liability mess so it wouldn't completely tank my personal credit before background checks.
Did you end up going through with the Chapter 7, or did you manage to restructure? Would love to hear if it actually came up in your interviews.
