Incoming Sophomore seeking advice

Hi all. I'm an Incoming Sophomore at a semi-target near NYC

I was not able to secure an internship this summer related to banking (wealth management, PE, etc). I worked in the spring at a big 4 tax internship in Finance, and this summer i'm working at an older YC startup in data analytics and growth.

I am trying to improve my resume by building projects currently, but not sure what else to try. I have had some success with cold emails and have gotten on calls, but haven't gotten referrals that led to anything yet.

Where should I try applying for the fall?  Any advice for me?

Thank you all!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a roadmap to help you as an incoming sophomore:

1. Leverage Your Current Experience

  • Your Big 4 tax internship and startup experience are solid foundations. Craft a compelling story about how these roles sparked your interest in banking. For example:
    • Highlight transferable skills like data analysis, problem-solving, and teamwork.
    • Explain how exposure to finance and growth strategies at the startup aligns with your interest in investment banking.

2. Secure a Part-Time Finance Internship

  • Aim for a part-time internship during the fall semester at a boutique investment bank, private equity firm, or wealth management firm. Being near NYC gives you access to numerous opportunities.
  • Remote internships can also work, but they are hit or miss. Focus on roles that provide substantive experience.

3. Cold Emailing and Networking

  • Continue cold emailing, but refine your approach:
    • Target alumni from your school who are in finance roles, especially senior associates or above, as they can push your resume.
    • Personalize your emails by referencing their background or recent deals they’ve worked on.
  • Use LinkedIn extensively to connect with professionals and request informational interviews. Networking is critical, as applying online often leads to a "black hole."

4. Build Relevant Skills and Projects

  • Work on finance-related projects to enhance your resume. For example:
    • Create a stock pitch or financial model.
    • Participate in case competitions or join finance-related clubs at your school.
  • These projects demonstrate initiative and interest in the field.

5. Apply Strategically

  • Focus on smaller firms for fall internships, as they are more likely to hire sophomores. Examples include boutique investment banks, private equity firms, and family offices.
  • Use resources like LinkedIn, Indeed, and niche job boards to identify opportunities.
  • Don’t overlook unpaid internships if they provide valuable experience.

6. Prepare for Recruiting

  • Start preparing for sophomore summer recruiting now. Having a fall internship under your belt will strengthen your candidacy.
  • Practice technical and behavioral interview questions, and ensure your resume is polished.

7. Set Goals and Track Progress

  • Write down specific goals, such as securing a fall internship, completing a stock pitch, or networking with a certain number of professionals weekly.
  • Regularly evaluate your progress and adjust your strategy as needed.

By following these steps, you’ll position yourself well for future opportunities in investment banking or related fields. Keep hustling, and good luck!
