I need some advice as I'm actively applying for jobs now and have an interview coming next week.
In short - I have several years of experience as a Financial Analyst working in Europe. My last position was at a big American company's office in EU. But I had to quit the job as my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer. (The reason was to help him in his last months, plus I had experience from several years earlier when my mom passed away in similar circumstances. Back then I didn't quit, but I wasn't able to work at 100%, so I thought it would be best just to stay off work for some time, as money weren't an issue).
Now, he's gone too and I'm back to job search. I've had already several interviews and everybody asks for the reason I didn't work for 1 year. I always say it was for personal reasons, but I feel it's not a good answer for HRs, as I never got past the first interview. One lady was actually quite pushy and insisted on more details, so I told her that I had to take care of a dying parent. The answer was 'Oh , I am sorry to hear that', but then again they didn't invite me to a next round.
So, I would be very happy to hear any thoughts how to deal with such a situation? Because, so far it seems that telling the truths makes people uncomfortable and they reject my applications, while not giving details make people think that I'm not a serious about my carer and again reject my applications.

You should tell the interviewer the truth. Your experiences are legitimate reasons for being out of the workforce for an extended period. Family members are very important and you don't want to regret missing and cherishing their last moments. If they don't like your answer, tell them to go fuck themselves. Most employers should be understanding as long as you can prove your competence and willingness to work. Be humble, diligent, and move on.
