Interview Tips

Have an interview next week at a firm for an associate position. Haven’t interviewed in a long time so looking for advice. Is it acceptable to wear a charcoal grey suit as opposed to navy blue? What should I be bringing to the interview itself to come across as prepared, polished, and professional? Any other tips?

Yes, you are fine wearing a charcoal suit. Any "business" color works - just not black and no color that you'd wear to the Met Gala.

Bring a notebook and a pen for notes. Yes, this is a bit anachronistic (I take all of my notes on my phone/ipad in "real life") but you obviously don't want to be whipping out the phone mid-interview looking like you're texting or something. This can be a small notebook that slides into your suit jacket pocket or a leather portfolio type notebook. The portfolio is also a bit old fashioned but is nice because you'll want to bring copies of your resume too and it's easy to stick those in there. If not and you go the small notebook route, bring some copies of resumes in a nice folder.

Finally, do whatever you can to just chill out beforehand. Rub one out in your apartment, belt out your favorite song in the car on the ride there, etc. You are going to be nervous and that's totally expected, but try to be chill as you can be. Most interviews are overwhelmingly vibe checks and personality tests. You wouldn't have gotten an invite if your resume didn't already fit the bill.

Absolutely, a charcoal grey suit is a great choice! Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips for your upcoming interview:

  1. Dress Code: A charcoal grey suit is perfectly acceptable. Pair it with a white shirt and a classic diagonal striped tie that's less than $100. Make sure your suit is tailored well - fit is more important than expensiveness. Always match your belt to your shoes and your socks to your pants. Keep your overall look conservative and professional.

  2. What to Bring: Bring multiple copies of your resume, a notepad, and a pen. Don't bring business cards - it can come off as odd or presumptuous.

  3. Behavior: Be aware of nervous habits you might have, like checking your watch or touching your face. Try to minimize these during the interview. Also, be friendly and respectful to everyone you meet, including other candidates.

  4. Preparation: If you're asked a technical question and you don't know the answer, it's okay to admit it. But do try to give an answer if you have a clue about the topic.

  5. During the Interview: Maintain good posture, even when sitting down. Smile when you speak - it can be heard in your voice. If there are refreshments, consider having the same drink as the interviewer, but don't drink all of it.

Remember, the goal is to stand out in a positive way. Good luck with your interview!
