Is it okay to give a one week notice as an analyst?

Am a first year analyst at a BB and have been at the firm full time for about 7 months. Recently, I received another offer that has a noticeably higher pay and in a better location so I'm planning on leaving at this point. However, I like my team and want to be somewhat respectful even on the way out. My other offer starts in early to mid september so not much time left at this point but has a somewhat flexible start date (so I can push back start date by maybe a week if needed).

I was wondering if it's considered acceptable / okay for junior analysts at BBs to give a one week notice that they are resigning? Would that basically burn bridges with my current company? What is the appropriate thing to do here?

Is it a competitor? If so, when you give your notice it will likely be your last day and the bridge with most is likely burned since you left so early. If you can afford it, I would put in your notice asap and go on vacation and take off as much time between jobs as you can. That’s what I did when I lateraled 6 months in.

The night before I quit I called all the analysts I was close with and gave them the heads up. At 9am I met with the staffer and said I’m grateful I had the opportunity to start my career at X but am going to a competitor that will better help me achieve my career goals and aligns with my interests. Said all my goodbyes by 1 and left that night for Europe.

they are both financial institutions but not direct competitors (different segments within finance). Given this, do you think it is acceptable to give a one week notice? Or will I essentially be burning bridges with my current employer regardless of how much notice I give given that I'm leaving only after 7 months on the job?

You’re burning it regardless because you just started being a value add and are leaving.

That being said, if it’s a huge upgrade, nobody can blame you. My move was a little bank to a BB (think CIBC -> GS) and while people were angry at first, as time has gone by my senior mentors within the firm who have since left have told me they are so proud and wish they would have had the opportunity to make the move. The rest forgot about me the moment I left because I was there such a short period of time.

Thank you so much for sharing your insight and experience! That makes a lot of sense. I guess given that I would kind of be blacklisted / burning bridges with my current employer regardless of my notice timeline, do you think I should just provide a notice closer to the start date for my new role (like give notice ~2 days prior to my start date at company 2) or should I still try to give a week or so of notice?

I honestly feel more comfortable / secure with giving notice closer to the start date for my new role since if I give a week or more of notice, and something happens to my new offer, I'm kind of screwed on both sides but that would obviously be screwing my team even more.
