Is no internship worth the risk?

I completed an internship at one of the Federal Reserve banks this summer. It was a great experience overall, but not the type of work I'm looking for. I have to let them know tomorrow about my return offer to intern again next summer. I have extended it as long as I could. Is it worth the risk with the current economy to turn down the offer to try to get a different experience next summer?
