Is Reneging a Good Career Move?

Midway into the recruiting cycle for SAs 2023, I accepted an internship offer. It was a good offer at a great firm, but not exactly the area/team that I would have liked, think middle office vs front office. I was considering continuing to recruit for other things like consulting (at least try for MBB) or other companies and lean on my current offer if all else fails, but I felt uncomfortable with the idea of reneging, both on principle (I was taught to always hold up your word from a young age), but also not to lose out on that firm in the future.

Thinking back, I feel like I may have stunted my own opportunities. As I think ahead on FT recruiting, I am considering accepting a FT offer but reneging as an option. What are your thoughts on reneging offers, and looking for opportunities after accepting?
