Is there is a job that requires TRAVEL?

Hello, 

I’m currently a student, I have investing internship experience.

Long term I’d love to be a GE investor and hopefully one day in the distant future to open my own firm.

During my 20’s I want to prioritise learning and improving as much as I can, but I’d also like to travel around the world for work purposes and hopefully have time during those trips for personal matters so it could look something like that:

Being based in NY working for a GE firm but spending ~2 weeks a month in other major hubs such as London, Singapore, SF, Paris etc. and while there have some time to hang out with friends (which I’d have because I’m there frequently) and maybe even go on dates with locals.

I assume there are activities that require physical meetings such as raising money, negotiating deals, meeting with entrepreneurs who the firm will potentially invest in. The problem is usually a junior employee would never participate in such activities…

Even going on conferences and thing like that and doing more of a BizDev activity for the firm would be great!  But also to be involved in the core activities because I want to learn.

So how this problem can be solved?

If you want to travel to be a necessity as a junior become a travel agent. No idea why undergrad got such a romanticized view of business travel. Its a lot of 6am/redeye flights, eating takeouts in a conference room, and working all evening in a shitty hotel set up. You will NOT speak in any physical meetings, and often times you might not even get to sit at the table. If you want to travel, get a high paying job and pay for it yourself. Also the destinations will NOT be London, Singapore, Paris etc. The London/APAC offices exist for a reason.

Idk about GE but in MM PE you’ll certainly travel. You’ll be contributing some in meetings but certainly won’t be leading the meetings by any stretch, more like contributing questions here and there and taking notes. And there’s no time to sight see. We’re often going in and out without wasting much time and you’ll be working pretty much the entire time. Preparing materials and coordinating work streams on the way there and if the meeting goes relatively well, you’ll be preparing next steps on the back end (e.g. preparing materials for IC). If you want to glamour travel, this is certainly not the industry. Try travel blogging or traveling for vacation.

You’ll learn, don’t you worry about that but I wouldn’t expect to be driving much until at least the Sr associate level, and I’m at a shop that gives juniors a good amount of autonomy. At the end of the day, a Partner or VP is going to make sure you get experience while also making sure you get as little of a chance as possible to f*** things up until they trust you. I’m sure in more sourcing heavy roles things may be different but I feel like this is probably a generous amount of contribution in traditional PE. Most of my friends in large cap PE just sit in meetings taking notes and aren’t really allowed to talk as associates. This is for a investment role but I assume things are likely similar in IR at the junior level but have no experience there.

 

Work travel is the worst. I feel like college kids glamorize it thinking they'll be jetting around the world to the sexiest cities and have all the time in the world to do what they want - realistically it's places you don't want to go at times that are inconvenient for you and short stretches (ever been to Ohio for 24 hours?), or if you're in a major city you're working all day and have no time to do what you want.

Once you are an MD you can have exciting work travel but as a junior it's usually logistical support or in-person site visits in a remote area. 

Better to make your money and travel on your own time

 

Not that’s related but I’m just wondering, if you work so many hours in IB and PE and sacrifice so much,

Why not just starting your own business? It’s only make sense if you want to start a fund.

Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about (I’m the guy that thought work travel would be cool after all) but it make sense that as a Senior (MD / Partner), 

you need to deliver you’ll eventually get kicked out, so why not taking full accountability and start your own shop?

You’ll get the reward but are you really taking the risk? In both cases you either deliver or you’re done.

and if you don’t want to start your own fund, then start a business and you’ll be economically successful in 20 - 25 years instead of 40 years….

 

Starting a business is difficult and risky. Vast vast majority fail. Not to mention that without a very strong background (ex-IB, ex-big tech, ex-something) it's difficult to get funding and attention. Even with that background, it's hard

If you show up to work in IB/PE and put some level of effort in, you will get paid a shit ton. The hours are a ton, but it's a low-risk, high-paying career. Yeah layoffs happen occasionally but failing upwards is a real thing especially in IB

 

If you're a student and want to travel internationally, study abroad. If you want to travel internationally for fun when working, get a job with a good WLB.
