Is this the end of the journey? Am I a confirmed failure?

Alright guys, just need some refocusing or redirections here. Think I have played all my cards, don't know what do to next, feel lost. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Basically from the worst non-target you can imagine, made it by luck and dedication to a top 3 BB for SA, didn't convert it, but started my career at another BB (joy of 2022). Got laid-off after one 1 year and it's been about year now, and it is just been impossible to find another job.

I get it the market is bad, and IB might be closed for me now but when I apply for other jobs, no luck my resume seems too IB focused, corp-dev in the UK is not an option unless you are an associate or from the Big-4. Wondering the best way right now to just find a job that is remotly business or finance related, so I can refocus and move-on in life, as I really started feeling like a failure at this point, and not sure I will have any career. I am like 27 now.

I have made some mistakes in IB, and had ample time to reflect on everything, but at this point in time just need a career I do not hate so I can try to move forward in life. I barely had like 7/8 interviews for IB, with like half of those processes getting cancelled

Worse is, I am an international student, so add-in visa and stuff and everything is just highly complicated, the IB money has ran out now, and currently working in healthcare, and the environment/culture just clashes with my core personality and goal in life. So it is even a struggle showing up to work, I don't know what to do with the job search anymore, HH have even stopped replying to me, I have also seen a few other friends in the same case all getting job offers after around 7-10months, but I do not know if it is something I am doing wrong or what I am missing.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps and advice to help you refocus and redirect your career:

  1. Networking and Informational Interviews:

    • Continue networking with investment banks and other finance professionals. This can open doors to opportunities that are not publicly advertised.
    • Reach out to friends, alumni, and professionals in various fields to get advice and insights into their careers. This can help you identify roles that might be a good fit for you.
  2. Broaden Your Job Search:

    • Apply to a wide range of finance-related positions such as credit analyst, investment analyst, FP&A, and corporate finance roles.
    • Consider roles in tech, management consulting, or accounting, as these fields often have overlapping skills with investment banking.
  3. Skill Development:

    • If you are considering a career shift, look into coding bootcamps or other skill development programs that can make you more marketable in different industries.
    • Consider pursuing additional certifications or courses that can enhance your resume and make you a more attractive candidate.
  4. Temporary and Side Gigs:

    • Look for temporary or contract roles in finance or related fields to keep your resume active and gain more experience.
    • Consider starting a side hustle or a small business to keep yourself engaged and potentially generate income.
  5. Mental Health and Well-being:

    • It's important to take care of your mental health during this challenging time. Consider talking to a career coach or counselor to help you navigate your feelings of failure and anxiety.
    • Remember that many successful professionals have faced setbacks and layoffs. It's a part of the journey, not the end.
  6. Alternative Career Paths:

    • Explore other industries where your investment banking skills might be applicable, such as corporate development, private equity, or even teaching finance-related courses.
    • Consider roles that might not be directly in finance but still align with your skills and interests, such as business development or strategy roles in growing companies.
  7. Geographic Flexibility:

    • If possible, be open to relocating to areas with better job markets or more opportunities in your field of interest.
  8. Visa and Immigration Considerations:

    • Since you are an international student, ensure that you are aware of all visa options and work closely with immigration advisors to explore all possible avenues for staying and working in your desired location.

Remember, the job market is tough right now, but persistence and a strategic approach can help you find the right opportunity. Keep pushing forward and leveraging your network and skills.

Just genuinely curious (not to sound insensitive)—was your nontarget still within Rusell Group? My nontarget might be worse than yours (totally random country) & I've learned the hard way that I can even get GS/MS/JPM interviews
