Landing a Job with a low GPA
Hello all,
I currently have two years remaining in school, hence I am looking for a summer job. I am in need of some tips/advice to stand out when it comes to the screening process as I have yet to receive an interview.
Here is my background: - Non-Target, with a 3.1x/4 GPA - Previous experience: Wealth Management, FP&A at a multibillion-dollar company (top 1000 - one of the largest in my country) - Extracurricular: Student Investment fund, Finance club, Business club, and case competitions
I realize that my GPA is low so I am planning to raise it over the course of the year. However, my main issue is that I cannot seem to get an interview anywhere. I have not applied solely to investment banking/capital markets roles. I have also applied to back office, corporate finance, and consulting positions. have also networked with people who work at these shops, getting one to three "references" per place I have applied. A lot of these places have closed their applications 1-2 weeks ago.
I know this is somewhat midway in the recruitment process (my country), however, my confidence has grown extremely wary.
Does anyone have tips or suggestions on what I should do moving forward? If I can't find a job, I am looking to volunteer in some third world country for the summer. Any thoughts on that would look on my resume.
I plan on taking GMAT this year and CFA level 1 during the summer or next December. Ideally, I would like to join the workforce upon graduation but am keeping an option open to do an MFin.
End goal is Private Equity or HF.
Thanks
Networking man. Almost always a solution in these situations and I can definitely say it did the job for me when my GPA was pretty lackluster. Cold call, reach out to alumni, anything until you're sick of it.

Appreciate the help. I've been trying to do that recently. Should I reach out to Alumni in upper management positions or lower roles like analyst?
My strategy has always been to start at the Analyst level and work my way up through referrals. Don’t think there’s a cut and dried way to do it but I have had success with it. I’ve found analysts will often give you helpful advice about future meetings with senior bankers.
Echoing the networking advice. A lot of the time, GPA's biggest impact hits when you're trying to get that first round interview. If you can network your way into that, the rest of the process is more or less in your control.
Yeah, that's my main issue, just getting to the main interview stage. If no alumni's from my school work at the firm, what are the best ways to build a link with the person I am messaging so I can get a better response rate?
