I am thinking about lateraling after my SA stint, but I’m worried about a few things. The first is group placement, if I lateral will I get stuck with a bad group? Second is the potential of lateraling, how difficult would it be to accomplish this, given that I am aiming for GS/MS.

A lot of FT recruiting is group specific (depending on headcount needs).

Difficulty depends on a few factors. Depends what shop you're coming from, how strong your networking is, etc but keep in mind there's a lot less spots for FT hires than SA. Not all groups recruit FT and networking is crucial
