Applied for 2 firms at roughly the same time (late August), have an interview with one coming up, haven't heard anything at all from the other, however the deadline for applications hasn't passed for that firm yet.
Was planning on emailing HR to ask if they have started looking at apps yet or waiting until the deadline, just wondering whether I should mention I have the interview coming up at the competitor? Or should this only be done when holding an offer?

Agree with above. Very unlikely - prob wouldn't bother. Unless you have an offer from the other firm and are truly interested in the shop where you haven't received an interview
Yeah don't leverage an interview, you'll look dumb for even trying to do that...

I have an upcoming interview with a top BB, arguably the best on the Street.
I've already interviewed with another BB and wont know if I'm going to the superday until around the end of the month.

No. They will probably ask you what other shops you are interviewing right now. But the fact that you only have an interview, not an offer and not even a superday invitation from another comparable shop, will likely to do little to no help.
