Leveraging Broker Dealer Internship

hey guys, ive been coming to this site for a little while but have finally created an account. im currently a freshman and recently received an internship at a brokerage firm. i was wondering if it is a good internship to commit to and if my ultimate aspirations are ib, what can i potentially get out of it? will it help my resume for perhaps more relevant work next year?

any advice or thoughts on the topic would be helpful.

thanks everybody

You're a freshman You have an internship in the financial industry

+ You want do do banking

= Do it, unless you have a better opening in IBD

When that's almost over, use it as leverage against the next thing. Cut, paste, repeat until you get where you want to go.

+1 on UFOInsider. This is a great internship for a frosh-soph summer. You can then try and go for a sophomore-junior internship at a boutique or an MM firm in IBD, and then finally go for the traditional junior-senior year internship at a major NYC firm.

Minor nit- know this is a relatively casual forum when it comes to grammar, but folks find it easier to read your posts when you capitalize.

Any experience you get as a freshman that's relevant to the industry is a huge plus, period. Also, it isn't PWM, and since everyone and their mother has PWM experience, congrats for netting something that isn't as common as air.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

yeah man. See if you can work there part time during the year, as you may be able to network over to where you want for the next round of internships and save yourself a lot of hassle. Do your job well first, and then get creative with how you position yourself there....you're doing well pretty early in the game, so keep up the good work.

StreetLuckReally depends on the firm and the people you work with.

I worked at a "full service investment bank" my sophomore summer, and had a great experience. It was looked at very favorably during resume screens/interviews.

It depends more what division you were in and what you did at that bank. Just because you worked at a full service investment bank and had a great experience doesn't mean he won't be making copies and cleaning the toilets.

Not the best internship for IB, especially from an average school. Try to cold call small boutiques and work for free. That is way better.

Like the others have said, not the best, but anything helps so don't feel like you're wasting your time. Work hard and you'll get it. Good luck!
