Looking for Summer Internship Selection Advice
Hi everyone, this is my first time on here and am looking to get any advice possible from the community that I've found so much useful information from in the past.
I am a student at a top university in the UK in the very fortunate position to have a number of Summer internship opportunities available to choose from this year. They are across multiple different areas of finance but I am completely unsure what to take.
My offers currently include:
- ER @ Fidelity Investments
- RX @ Houlihan Lokey
- M&A @ BofA
- M&A @ Greenhill
- Equity L/S Team Data Analyst @ Balyasny Asset Management
I am also still in a number of processes with other firms, primarily HFs and Quant Trading shops. I am also considering ditching finance to go all in on my startup which I think is my longer term preference anyway, but I still ought to choose one of these Summers for now.
If anyone takes the time to provide advice or insight that would be fantastic and I would appreciate it a lot. Many thanks in advance!
(Also if I have made any mistakes by naming firms or some other etiquette issue that I am unaware of in this post please let me know, like I said I am totally new to this)
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you can approach your summer internship decision:
1. Clarify Your Long-Term Goals
If your ultimate goal is to pursue your startup, consider which internship will provide the most transferable skills or connections to support that venture. For example:
If you're leaning toward a career in finance, focus on the prestige and exit opportunities:
2. Evaluate the Learning Curve
3. Consider Culture and Fit
4. Startup vs. Finance
5. Hedge Fund/Quant Trading Processes
Suggested Prioritization (if finance-focused):
Final Thoughts
If you're still unsure, consider reaching out to alumni or professionals at these firms to get a better sense of the day-to-day work and culture. Additionally, weigh the potential impact of each internship on your long-term goals, whether in finance or your startup.
Good luck, and remember, any of these options will be a fantastic addition to your resume!

Would probably go for Balyasny, most relevant and helpful for your startup. Would advise against BofA especially or Greenhill
