Need a career coach/advisor

Trying to find the best way to advance my career. Went to a semi target undergrad, non finance major (think history, law, English). Got all my licenses and working in a mostly administrative role for an FA at a large PWM (UBS, MS, RBC). My current goal is an analyst position in PWM, but I haven’t gotten any interviews. My gpa is 3.5. Id also like to go to a half decent MBA in a few years. I’m looking into doing an MFIN, I’ve tried networking. How can I get a better job and what’s the best way to set myself up for an MBA?

To advance your career and position yourself for an analyst role in PWM and eventually a strong MBA program, here’s a strategic roadmap based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Breaking into PWM Analyst Roles

  • Leverage Your Current Role: Since you're already in a large PWM firm, focus on building relationships internally. Express your interest in transitioning to an analyst role to your FA and other team members. Demonstrate your value by taking on more analytical or client-facing tasks, even if they’re outside your current responsibilities.
  • Networking: Continue networking aggressively. Reach out to alumni, colleagues, and professionals in analyst roles at your firm or competitors. Use LinkedIn and cold emails to connect with people in similar positions and request informational interviews. Highlight your licenses and willingness to learn.
  • Skill Development: PWM analysts are often "jack of all trades" with strong professionalism and client interaction skills. However, technical skills like financial modeling, portfolio analysis, and market research are also valuable. Consider taking courses in these areas to strengthen your resume.
  • Internships: If you’re struggling to land a full-time analyst role, consider applying for internships in PWM or related fields. Even a short-term internship can help bridge the gap and make your resume more competitive.

2. Positioning for an MBA

  • Build a Strong Narrative: MBA programs value a clear and compelling story. Frame your career as a journey from a non-finance background to a licensed professional in PWM, emphasizing your adaptability, client-facing skills, and ambition to grow in the industry.
  • Extracurriculars and Leadership: Take on leadership roles at work or in your community. For example, organize events, lead projects, or volunteer in finance-related initiatives. This will strengthen your MBA application.
  • GMAT/GRE Prep: Start preparing for the GMAT or GRE early. A strong score can offset a semi-target undergrad and non-finance major.
  • Target Schools: Research MBA programs that value diverse backgrounds and have strong finance or wealth management tracks. Programs like Georgetown, UNC Kenan-Flagler, or Emory Goizueta could be good options.

3. Considering an MFIN

  • Evaluate ROI: An MFIN can be a good stepping stone if it’s from a top program and helps you land a better role. However, it’s not always necessary if you can transition to an analyst role and build experience before applying for an MBA.
  • Top Programs: If you pursue an MFIN, aim for programs with strong placement in PWM or finance roles, such as MIT Sloan, Princeton, or Vanderbilt.

4. Additional Tips

  • Address the GPA: A 3.5 GPA is solid, but you can strengthen your profile by excelling in certifications like the CFA or CFP. These also demonstrate your commitment to the industry.
  • Overcome the Non-Finance Major Stigma: Highlight transferable skills from your major, such as critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving. Pair this with technical skills gained through certifications or courses.
  • Stay Persistent: Breaking into PWM can be challenging, especially without direct experience. Keep refining your resume, practicing interviews, and expanding your network.

By focusing on these steps, you can improve your chances of landing an analyst role, set yourself up for a strong MBA application, and advance your career in PWM.
