Need advice on recruiting.

Hey guys,

Coming here for some advice given my unique situation

Context:

Currently a 2nd year analyst doing PWM at a BB and have been trying to lateral to IB for some time now.

I'm potentially in the final stages of a recruiting process (went through 3 rounds of interviews + completed a M&A case study).

VP who has been my main contact for recruitment tells me that the team likes me and thought my work on the case study was top notch, so he plans to set up some coffee chats with some senior bankers some time in December when the group has more breathing room to discuss about expanding the team. They're being crushed right now with many deals and at this point haven't had time to discuss about hiring.

VP says that he really wants to push for me, and gives me advice saying that, given my background isn't traditional as I don't have any IB / Corp fin experience under my belt, I should try to get involved / do things outside of work to help show the senior bankers when i meet them, that I can hit the ground running.

Ask:

Thing is, I'm not in a role that gets involved on deals nor anything really related to IB. I've been doing the WSP trainings so my modelling has been pretty decent, which has helped me on my case studies.

What else can I do to make myself more competitive? I can think of:

  1. Reading up on past deals that the group has done, and perhaps be prepared to go in-depth and talk about the deals and my opinions of them.

  2. Keep updated with recent deals, and similarly have an opinion on them.

  3. Continue working on my modelling (I plan to do so, but don't see how that would matter at that stage though).

  4. Value stocks on my own (I guess similar to modelling, but I don't see how that will help me be seen as someone that can help on a deal compared to asset management roles).

Open to other things that I could do, any thoughts?

Seeing how you're a lateral without IB experience AND you have a good relationship with this VP, I would ask him your question. He'll understand your situation. Share with him the things you are doing on your own (shows great initiative) and ask him what he recommends you do to learn more, be a competitive candidate, and ultimately how you can prepare to best help his team.
