Just stumbled upon this site a few days ago. Definitely wish I would have stumbled upon this last year when I was a senior...
Anyways, was hoping to get some advice/reality check/any other wisdom you want to impart on me.
I graduated last december from a top school and emerging top business program, and was all set to go to one of the top IBDs on the street, when the firm blew up very publicly in March. The subsequent takeover by a BB was also obviously very well documented across any form of media (WSJ, FT, CNN, Bloomberg, etc etc)
The only position at the BB after the takeover available to me was a "dreaded" OPs position, and a long list of circumstances, which I won't detail here, essentially forced me into taking the offer.
My question is this. I ultimately am not interested in middle office work, and am much more interested in working in any form of front office role (or at least, would much rather be working in any front office role than what i'm doing right now). Have I screwed myself over by taking this Ops role? If so, do you have any suggestions for how to dig myself out? If not, any advice on next steps would really be appreciated.

Of course not...you're a step ahead, you have a job! Make the most of it...network internally, take on additional responsibilty. Make sure your well-liked in your current position and get some solid contacts internally, network externally with headhunters and recruiters.
take it from someone who went through this recently..
i do recommend that u network internally and work with recruiters & headhunters.
but enjoy ur work or at least pretend to enjoy. give this job 110%. because they are many other people who would like to have that job and they know it. so they can let you go and have you replaced in a few weeks..
i left my job voluntarily because it interfered with my interviews and now its just a waiting game for that right opportunity. and i have nothing to fall back on.
i would say that even though the job may not be what you wanted, just work hard, make money and then once you've established a good reputation become more aggressive with interviewing.
at the end of the day, you can always go back to school (it probably won't be one of the top bschools) and go from there.
Doesn't ops still take in like 90K out of undergrad?

to everybody else - thanks for the advice. yes, i am certainly very thankful to be employed in finance at the moment, even if it is in an ops capacity. in no way was i trying to come off as some bratty kid who "deserves" anything. thanks again.
