Need help deciding on an internship

Hey everyone,

Freshman here at a non-target, really grateful to have a few internship options but struggling to decide which would be best, especially with IB recruiting next year in mind.

How would you rank these?

M&A Analyst role at a lesser-known investment bank
Title sounds great, but after looking into it, the role seems more like sales (sourcing clients, outreach, etc.) than actual deal work but the role is called "M&A analyst". The IB also is completely remote, no actual office. (Around 5k LinkedIn followers, I know this doesn't anything but just for reference)

Actuarial Science/Mathematics role at a mid-sized healthcare company
Would be an in-person role working ~40 hrs/week for ~2 months. Definitely more legit, but obviously less directly related to IB. (Around 50k LinkedIn followers for reference)

Right now I’m trying to figure out which would position me better for sophomore/junior IB recruiting. My main questions are:

  • Is it better to take the “M&A” title even if the work is mostly outreach/sales and the firm is relatively unknown?
  • Or would a more structured, reputable company internship (even if it’s actuarial) carry more weight on a resume?
  • Bigger question: would those ~40 hrs/week be better spent on preparing for recruiting (networking, technicals, etc.) or doing other things instead of doing an internship that may not directly help with IB?

I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from people who recruited for IB from non-targets or had to make a similar choice.
