Need some advice
I’m a non target student who is graduating December 2026. I have recently tried to network very hard for a role at a small boutique bank (40 bankers) I’ve talked to a few analysts and associates. One of those analysts said I should sign up for this virtual event that the boutique bank was hosting. I end up going to the virtual event and asked some of the VP’s questions and then followed up by email and got a response of “you should definitely apply to the internship program.” Another VP agreed to have a coffee chat with me next week.
This morning I wake up to a rejection email when the applications opened up three days ago. And yesterday I had a really really solid coffee chat with an associate. I’m worried since it’s a small team they would notice my application again. Should I just give up or should I reconsider reapplying?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you should consider:
Don't Give Up Yet: Rejections can happen for various reasons, and it doesn't necessarily mean you're out of the game. Since you've already built some rapport with analysts, associates, and even VPs, leverage those connections. The fact that a VP encouraged you to apply and another agreed to a coffee chat shows that you’ve made a positive impression.
Follow Up Strategically: After your upcoming coffee chat with the VP, you can tactfully bring up the rejection. Frame it as seeking advice: "I noticed my application was rejected, and I wanted to ask if there’s any feedback or ways I can improve my candidacy for future opportunities." This shows humility and a willingness to learn, which can resonate well.
Reapply Thoughtfully: If the VP or associate you’ve connected with suggests reapplying, go for it. Small teams do notice applications, but if someone internally vouches for you, it can make a significant difference. Ensure your application is tailored and highlights any feedback you’ve received.
Expand Your Search: While pursuing this boutique bank, continue networking with other firms. As highlighted in WSO threads, targeting multiple small boutique IBs or PE shops in your region can increase your chances. Use tools like LinkedIn to identify firms and reach out for 15-minute calls.
Stay Persistent: Many non-target success stories on WSO emphasize resilience. Rejections are part of the process, but consistent networking, follow-ups, and improving your application can eventually lead to success.
Good luck, and remember, persistence often pays off in this industry!
