Networking w covid

I'm a student from a non target and was curious as to people's networking methods at banks or funds or whatever. Especially w covid nd no face to face, how would people already at these places or people in my position as well do their networking.

I’m not networking with banks or funds specifically, but I have networked a lot over the past 10 months.

My strategy:

The channels: LinkedIn messages to analysts and associates with a synopsis of myself and a request for a virtual coffee chat over phone or video. Email messages with a similar structure (no more than 3 sentences). Warm connections from friends or having attended an association conference and exchanging contacts.

The methods: if they respond, they either give a time, give a date range or leave it to you to plan. Regardless, once a time has been set, I follow up with an email containing the chat details (date, time & zoom or meets link or phone number).

The chat: I avoid asking what could be found on their LI profile and minimize talking about myself. I do some research and bring up an open position if there is one.

The results: it’s gotten me some interviews.

My personal take: its easier to network in this environment than the previous. My rationale is that people have more flexibility over their own schedule (to be fair, banking/funds may be the exception) and there’s no time lost in the commute to the coffee shop / to the city. Previously, I would spend 5-6 hours in commute alone to attend 2-3 coffee chats spread across the day.
