Networking with a VP

Was wondering how to approach this different than an analyst. Are there any specific questions to target the VP of a financial sponsors group? Is it supposed to be conversational or will I get quized. Should I ask for referral at the end , or hold off on it. I've heard V / MD are turned off by asking.

More likely to be conversational rather than "quizzes" although there may be a fine line between the 2 - e.g. "so why are you interested in banking?" can be seen to fall in both categories

Only ask for referral if (1) you know this person already (friend of a friend); or (2) you somehow have 100% conviction that this guy is all over you

Just try to make a good impression, and instead of asking explicitly for a referral just name drop this guy when you are recruiting / interviewing ("I heard from MD XYZ that...")

Most of the time it will just be conversational...I would have interest in the industry the VP is in and ask relevant/smart questions know about trends and deals in his space... He may be a chill dude and not care about this and just want to get to know and help you or he could be an ass and drill you... you never know so unfortunately have to prepare for everything. In my case, usually the person is fine, occasionally do get the asses
