No internship. What can I do in replacement this summer?

I'm in my second year at a low ranking non-target. I'm planning on doing a masters in finance at a target uni or a strong semi-target. I am preparing for that on the side.

But this year I have no internship. Not even one finance internship in some department somewhere. I'll be applying for internships for 2022 (after I graduate but still my penultimate summer if I take a masters), but no investment bank will want a non-target with no finance experience at all for the summer analyst position.

What can I do this summer to make up for this disappointment? The good news is I am the president of investment society at my uni and I'm focusing on investment banking so we'll be teaching valuation, investment banking 101 by Rosenbaum and Pearl, networking skills, excel modelling, etc.. .

But what can I do this summer. Now, to increase my chances?

There's still a chance to get something finance related. Normally I see non-junior interns at least taking a wealth management internship for a month at BofA Merrill Lynch usually. Maybe you can cold call a few boutique finance-related shops to land something last minute. In the meantime, focus your time on networking and positioning yourself for internships during the school year. That school year internship will then be a strong resume builder for your summer.

Echo everything here. Network the absolute hell out of the rest of the summer. If you can somehow find something great, if not you’ll have a solid base for starting next year’s process.

That and read as much as you can about the industry. How are the markets doing? Which sectors are hot? What are some interesting deals that were announced in 1H21? What are experts predicting for the next 6-12 months? If you don’t have a WSJ account you should def get one (plus the student discount is a good deal).

Good luck!
