no interviews for second tier

So I am getting interviews from M/B/B and all the BBs that post for OCR. I also resume dropped for the lower tier consulting shops like IBM, Accenture, Deloitte and ZS. For some reason I get interviews for 100% of the resume drop for the former group and got rejected (not even an alternate spot) by the four second tier shops in the latter group. Is there something they look for that I am missing?

You need to change the name on your cover letter from McKinsey to Accenture.

Kidding. That seems incredibly odd hellogoodbye. It definitely should not be happening.

There are rumours going around on our campus...that second-tier banks and consulting firms stay away from candidates who are deemed "too good" for them...basically, they don't want a bunch of kids who end up not taking their offers anyway. It's happened to my girlfriend...she has a GMAT score of 770 and her undergraduate GPA of 3.81, and a long/short equity hedge fund internship experience.... Needless to say, local second-tier firms wouldn't give her interviews for some reason...but she got all the other "1st tier" ones.

i am sure I dont fall under that category, just your typical 3.5 (3.7 engineering major gpa) dude from a semi target with BB middle office sophomore internship.

NikkisixxSame thing happened to me, I got MBB but not Deloitte, ZS, ...

I can kind of understand where these 2nd-tier firms are coming from - wasted effort if these kids are just taking MBB anyway. But that's a bit silly. There's only so many MBB jobs to go around, and by not interviewing top candidates, they can potentially miss out on getting someone really good.

Also - it kind of screws over the 'amazing' candidates, that may get MBB interviews - but not the offers, and not have anything to fall back on, assuming they aren't sitting on the fence b/w consulting and finance firms.

Jeffy14What's MBB please ? and BBs and OCR ? =) and how do you know what's tier 1 or 2? Thanks a lot

OCR = on campus recruiting MBB = mid bulge bracket / middle market IB

No, wrong.

MBB is McKinsey Bain and BCG the three major consulting groups BB is bulge bracket OCR is on campus recruiting.
