non-NY internships

Are there any advantages/disadvantages to getting an internship outside of NY, for instance in San Francisco, or in Europe? When you apply for a full time position, are these experiences perceived the same way as an internship in New York? Also is the actual experience similar? Thanks for any responses!

Your internship is based on the amount of responsibility and the quality of work you produced. I don't care if you did your internship in the middle of nowhere. I'd always opt for the better experience over location. As for the locations you mentioned, San Fran and Europe are certainly not going to be looked down on.

Agreed, make sure you look into whether the office location sources and executes its own deals or not. Most groups in Silicon Valley do their own deals and the same goes for Europe. However, the experience can certainly be diluted if you're working at a bank in Chicago, Houston, or LA that sources deals and sends them to NY for execution (not saying all these locations do this, but you need to ask tough questions when doing your due diligence).

Seriously... Europe? There's a vast difference between London, UK and Lucerne, Switzerland, between Budapest and Susworth...

That's like saying is there any pluses in working out of Asia, instead of Africa!

NY NY NY NY NY NY NY NY!!!!!

Don't listen to that nonsense!!!!

I live in CT and made the mistake of choosing LA. Biggest mistake. Internships are about NETWORKING period. Its about who you meet and who can help you get a job when you graduate. NYC is the financial capital of the world, go there networking until you can't keep your eyes open every day. Trust me.

Thanks for the replies. The reason I considered internships in san francisco is that I live on the west coast and it's much more convenient for arranging interviews. However, if the experiences were different enough then I would try to get an interview in New York instead despite the inconvenience. As for Europe, it would be nice to work abroad before as I've never done that, and specifically I was thinking London since I speak only English. I know a couple people who interned in Europe although none on the west coast.

Do the experiences differ much depending on whether the bank is MM or BB?

Really eb963? You mean to tell me there's a serious difference between working in London (thanks for pointing out that it's in the UK too) and working in Budapest (you forgot to mention it was in Hungary!?) "LOL!" -- You tool.

Orange - I worked on the WC (SF) and I can tell you the hours and the experience are extremely comparable to those same opportunities in NY. LA is a different story, as many banks don't execute deals from this office (UBS and CS being one of the obvious exceptions). Given your location, don't overlook the SF and Silicon Valley opportunities.

Do a quick search regarding BB vs. MM banking. There are numerous posts discussing the tradeoffs and differences between the two.
