Non Target
So im currently a freshman at a non target (think psu, rutgers, Udel, etc) and im worried that i wont be able to have the career that i want because of my school. I want to be a PE rainmaker one day, maybe have my own firm, but im not sure if ill be able to due to the fact that I go to a non target. Any advice on how i can get to where i want to be, or if its even possible at this point.
Ah, the classic tale of the non-target underdog aiming for the stars in the PE universe! First off, let me assure you, young financier, that your dreams of becoming a PE rainmaker and perhaps even helming your own firm are not only possible but entirely within reach. The path from non-target to PE stardom is not a myth; it's a narrative written by those who dare to hustle, network, and outperform. Here's how you can start scripting your own success story:
Embrace Your Current Situation: Recognize the strengths of your school and leverage them. Join finance or investment clubs, and if they don't exist, consider starting one. This shows initiative and leadership.
Network Like a Pro: The importance of networking cannot be overstated. Connect with alumni from your school who have made it into finance. LinkedIn is your friend here. Don't just ask for a job; seek advice, mentorship, and insights into the industry.
Secure Relevant Internships: Aim for internships that will give you a solid foundation in finance. It doesn't have to be a brand-name firm right away. Smaller, boutique firms can offer hands-on experience that is invaluable. Every bit of experience counts and helps build your resume.
Excel Academically and Professionally: Grades matter, especially when you're from a non-target. Combine that with strong internships, and you become a compelling candidate.
Consider Further Education: An MBA from a top business school could be a game-changer. It's a common path for many looking to break into PE, especially from a non-target background. It offers not just education but also networking opportunities and a brand name that can open doors.
Be Persistent and Patient: Understand that this is a marathon, not a sprint. You might start in investment banking, consulting, or another related field before making the jump to PE. That's perfectly okay and, in fact, a tried and tested route.
Remember, many have walked this path before you. The non-target background narrative is not a barrier but a challenge to overcome. It's your grit, determination, and ability to seize opportunities that will define your career, not just the name of your school. Keep pushing, keep learning, and never underestimate the power of a well-crafted cold email or LinkedIn message. Your journey might just inspire the next generation of non-target hopefuls. Keep swinging for the fences, future rainmaker!
