Nothing for SA 27' – What now?

To preface (Non-Target, 2028 Grad)

I have gone through 8 processes now, 2 SD's, and have failed to convert any of them into offers. It is now mid-March and there are little to no applications opening up for MM or LMM firms. Is it time to pivot? If so, what do I pivot to so that I can eventually recruit for FT?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Don’t Panic – There’s Still Time
While it’s mid-March and many SA spots are filled, there are still opportunities to explore. Smaller firms (boutique IBs, MM, or LMM) often recruit on a rolling basis or later in the cycle. Keep an eye on job boards, LinkedIn, and networking opportunities to uncover hidden openings.

  2. Networking is Key
At this stage, networking can be your most powerful tool. Reach out to alumni, professionals at target firms, or even connections from previous interviews. A well-placed referral can open doors that online applications won’t. Be persistent but professional in your outreach.

  3. Consider Alternative Paths
If IB SA roles are drying up, pivoting to adjacent fields can still position you for full-time IB recruiting later. Consider roles in:

    • Corporate Finance
    • Valuation Advisory
    • Big 4 Transaction Services
    • Private Equity Internships (even unpaid)
These roles can help you build relevant skills and experience to leverage during full-time recruiting.
  4. Focus on Skill Development
Use this time to sharpen your technical skills. Enroll in financial modeling courses, practice case studies, and refine your understanding of accounting and valuation. This will not only prepare you for future interviews but also make you a stronger candidate for lateral opportunities.

  5. Prepare for Full-Time Recruiting
Full-time recruiting typically starts early in the fall. Use the summer to build your resume with relevant experience, even if it’s not in IB. Demonstrating initiative and a clear trajectory toward finance will make you stand out.

  6. Stay Persistent
Rejection is part of the process, especially from a non-target background. Keep applying, networking, and improving. Many successful professionals faced similar challenges but broke through with persistence and adaptability.

If you’re feeling stuck, consider reaching out to mentors or peers for advice and support. The journey is tough, but with the right strategy, you can still achieve your goals.
