OK to say job is top choice in the thank you note?
Hi,
I just had an interview with a company and after talking to them, I have decided that they are my top choice. I was going to mention it in the note, but one advisor I spoke with said not to because it makes me seem desperate and could get me dinged, so before I send anything, I was wondering if you guys can tell me what you think about this.
They want to get the best candidate for the position, not the candidate that likes them the best.
Please god don't tell them that before the interview. Save the "top-choice" talk until the superday.
It won't help you much in getting the job, but neither will a thank you note.
If you do include it, don't gush about how this is your dream job or anything like that. Say you were very impressed with the firm, liked the people you met, etc.
Andyinsandiego is right in that they want the best person for the job, but candidate enthusiasm can set you apart. This holds true more at the entry level when they care less about what you know and more about whether they like you. They want somebody hungry, excited about the job, and ready to learn.
Fair enough.
hell no. just knock their socks off in the final rounds or whatever and tell them what sets THEM apart from other firms and why that fits your goals and interests.
Well this was the final round, which is why I'm asking. At this point, I'm most interested in them and obviously I won't be gushing like a lunatic, I would just say something along the lines of I was very impressed with your firm and this position is among my top choices after our discussion. Is that alright or should I just send a generic thank you note?
among my top choices? why dont you just say you are very interested in the position
^lol that could work too. Thanks guys and sorry for what appears to have been a stupid question.
Everyone wants to be in a group whose status is better than their own.
Every group wants someone to be in the group whose status is better than the groups.
You need to satisfy the illusion if you want the job. In other words, make them think that you are better than the group. Then they will want you. If they know you want in, they think less of you.
Anecdotally, I said this twice during recruiting season. One firm offered me and the other didn't. Though I'm pretty sure the firm that dinged me did so because I really screwed up some technicals. Personally I think it's a good move if it's a secondary market or some other area/group that notoriously has a hard time with people wanting to leave for better cities or groups.
