Personal vs Work Email (networking)

If an alum has their personal email on their Linkedin page, is it better to email the gmail account on their page or use standard work email structure? This is for SA26 but i'd assume any advice would be applicable broadly.

Thanks in advance

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights on using personal vs. work email for networking:

  1. Professionalism: Always ensure that your email is professional, regardless of whether you use a personal or work email. Avoid casual or unprofessional email addresses.

  2. Personal Email Preference: If an alum has listed their personal email on their LinkedIn page, it is generally a good idea to use that email. This indicates their preference for receiving networking inquiries through that channel.

  3. Work Email Structure: If no personal email is provided, you can use tools like Hunter.io to determine the standard work email structure of the company and reach out accordingly.

  4. Email Timing: Send your emails at optimal times. For example, sending emails on Tuesdays at 10:00 AM is recommended as people are usually too busy on Mondays and early mornings.

  5. Content of the Email: Ensure your email is concise, professional, and includes a clear purpose. Mention any small connections or shared interests to increase your response rate.

  6. LinkedIn Messaging: LinkedIn can also be a powerful tool for networking. It allows the recipient to quickly review your background and decide whether to engage with you.

In summary, if an alum has provided their personal email, use it. If not, use the standard work email structure. Always maintain professionalism and consider the timing and content of your email to maximize your chances of a positive response.
