Please advise me career options/plans
Hello everyone,
I am a newbie to this website. I have found valuable information about career path / plans in this forum. However, I want to have a more specific advise to my background, hence writing this. I appreciate in advance for your help.
I graduated the George Mason University with MS in Accounting. I did not get the job at big 4 because I was not smart enough to know how important the opportunity at big 4 is. If I had an mentor telling this, I would have had prepared to grab the opportunity. At that time, I focused too much on just getting the degree and having an any job. Instead, I got an internship in the accounting team at a non-public mid-size firm and became senior accountant after working there for 3 years.
But then I lost my job because the company was bought out. I lived my life with a job for about 3 months and got a new senior accountant position at the George Washington University. I am not sure why my manager at that time named this position Senior Accountant. This job was more like financial analyst would do, working on budgets and forecasting. And I am still working here as senior financial analyst.
A great thing about this job is that it subsidizes a lot of the MBA tuition. I was lucky enough to be accepted to the GW part time MBA program. I will probably finish it by Dec, 18. I also got my CPA license recently after spending years of passing the exam and getting 150 college credits.
I started working on setting my goals early this time. My current GPA is above 3.5 now and I do not want to miss the opportunities like I did years before. Like many people here, I want to get in investment / consulting. But I am not sure what is my best shot. The GW MBA is not a target school/program for MBB / Wall Street. Possible employers in management consulting are 2nd tier consulting firms like Olyver and Deloitte. I will still be happy if I can work in their strategy & operation side, but not advisory.
What would be my best shot to get in and maximize the use of my background and experience? I also looked at a job at the World Bank in case my plan does not work out. However, the job is similar to what I do now. It is about reporting, budgeting and forecasting. I guess it just pays more. I will still appreciate it if I get that but I feel like I will be stuck in this forever if I do not change my career when I finish my MBA.
So please, what is your opinion on this?
IF there are alumni in consulting then start there. Your I don't see how the CPA will help. This seems like an opportunity for you to re brand yourself.
