Reading recommendations for a HS student interested in IB career
I've been browsing this forum for the last few weeks out of general interest and I thought I'd write my first post here today on the first day of the new year! I've been thinking about careers recently, having finished off my college applications last week and sent them to relevant colleges! I'm currently in the UK in my final year of secondary/high school and will be reading History at a Russell Group university (UK uni offers secured already) or potentially, a US T10 university (I won't hear back until early April).
Recently, my interests in the financial sector piqued whilst meeting/listening to visiting speakers from IB and Private Equity areas at a young people's careers conference. I confess that I am not as well-informed compared to some of my friends who study Economics for A-Levels or those who have been reading the Economist/WSJ for years. My best friend ticks these two boxes and I have to confess I am very envious of his bulky knowledge of finance. Makes me feel really daft when he starts talking about financial-related stuff because I have no clue what he is talking about. (I don't study Economics at A-Level - a minor regret now...)
I would like to broaden my knowledge about the IB industry, the intricacies of deals/transactions, Wall Street and City of London financial hubs. Where should I start? Are there any must-read books/articles or must-watch movies or videos? I'm seeking advice here because, usually, for History, I can look up whatever historic event on Wikipedia or on HistoryToday and by the end of the article, I can consider myself somewhat well-informed on the topic but for financial stuff, I don't know where to look or even, start researching? It's a goliath of a topic, which I am completely oblivious to as a humanities-orientated person.
Basically boils down to this: any reading/audio-visual recommendations about the financial industry, especially the role of IB for a high school student, who has not a single clue about the aforementioned.
I look forward to hearing from you and Happy New Year!!
