Real Estate M&A/Noteworthy Deals

Dear Monkeys,

Incoming MBA student here and looking to prepare for pre-MBA diversity recruiting. My interest is in RE/REGAL IB and have been searching online for major deals in the industry, especially trying to find which banks advised on them. Google only gets you so far without the appropriate subs.

Would appreciate any particularly noteworthy transactions I could mention for EV/GS/JPM etc, including bond issuances or anything else, not just M&A. Also, would highly appreciate insight from anyone working in this space into how the RE coverage groups differ at various shops.

Cheers.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about Real Estate M&A and noteworthy deals involving major banks like Evercore (EV), Goldman Sachs (GS), and JPMorgan (JPM):

  1. Goldman Sachs (GS) and Morgan Stanley (MS): Historically, these firms have been strong players in the Real Estate Investment Banking sector. They are known for providing comprehensive advisory services and have been involved in significant M&A transactions and underwriting activities on the principal side.

  2. JPMorgan (JPM): JPMorgan has a robust presence in Real Estate Investment Banking. They are particularly noted for their work in bond issuances and other financing activities. JPMorgan's Real Estate & Lodging (RE&L) group has been involved in various high-profile deals, providing them with a strong reputation in the market.

  3. Evercore (EV): Evercore has a strong M&A advisory role and has been involved in significant real estate transactions. Although specific deals are not detailed in the context, Evercore's involvement in the sector is well-regarded, particularly in corporate M&A.

  4. Coverage Group Differences: The coverage groups at different banks can vary significantly. For instance, some banks might focus more on advisory and underwriting, while others might be more involved in bond issuances or direct investment activities. Banks like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are known for their aggressive advisory strategies, which sometimes leads to a perception of subpar advisory services compared to their aggressive financial strategies.

For your preparation, it would be beneficial to look into specific transactions these banks have advised on recently, especially in the context of Real Estate. Understanding the role these banks played in significant deals, their approach to financing, and the overall market impact of these transactions will provide you with solid talking points for your interviews.

Additionally, networking with professionals in these groups or connecting with alumni from your MBA program who work in these areas can provide insider insights and more specific examples of transactions and roles these banks have played.
