Reconnecting with Interviewer?

Had final stage interviews with a PE firm in March. Before the Principal (point of contact @ the firm) told me they'd push the process to this summer. Had bonded well with the team though. Emailed the Principal 2 weeks back referencing an article about an industry that they've invested in. Was hoping that he'd respond and also share an update on their hiring plans. Didn't hear back and am now thinking of following up and directly asking for an update. Should I just call him, or is email better? Which one is advisable? What is the best way to ask for an update without coming across as awkward? Should I ask to have a catch up call? If so, what should I write as my purpose of asking for one? Thank you v much in accrued thanks
