Referrals for SA
Can somebody tell me how effective referrals are? Especially if you are coming from a non-target? Could an analyst referral get you an interview? Wb associate/VP/MD?

Highly dependent. An analyst on the school recruiting team can easily get you a first round. An MD who just forwards to an analyst or associate and calls it a referral isn't helping you much.
Should it be at my school? What if let's say they go to Ivy but it happens that they really liked me and would want to give me a referral.
No problems with that at all. The advice is to start with your school's alums since people will be more likely to respond/help someone from their alma mater. But absolutely fine and common for others to refer you
They are basically required for top firms, especially considering you're at a non target. If you have a decent resume you can still get some interviews, but it will be mostly for MM banks. Also responding to your other comment, yes even if they don’t go to your school it still is important
