Rejection after e-mail saying they'll be in touch soon?

Submitted an online application for some role at a BB in UK and received an initial response that reads:

"We want to let you know that after an initial review of your submission, we’re interested in learning more about you, so your application is being considered further. This means you’re one step closer to joining our team! We’ll be in touch soon with the next steps of your application review."

To this day, I have not received a follow-up. Saw on LinkedIn that another applicant with the same response got rejected down the line. That practice seems deceptive.

What's the logic here?

You shouldn’t read too much into auto generated emails.

I know what it’s like to apply online to a role you really want, you try to read between the lines of every email you get and fluctuate between hopefulness, annoyance and anxiety.

The truth is that apply to top roles via the internet is a real crapshoot. Sometimes a human never looks at your resume. Sometimes HR rejects your candidacy because they don’t really understand the role they are screening for. Sometimes the role is just posted to check a box for compliance.

It’s a numbers game, so just apply to as many roles as you can.

And always remember that a personal reference from someone goes a long way to moving your resume to the top of the heap.
