Removing Bad Experience from LinkedIn
Should you remove work experiences from LinkedIn as you would a resume?
I did an internship at Northwestern Mutual as a sophomore in college (I didn't have any other prospects). This internship was complete BS and essentially just cold calling friends and family. NWM has a poor reputation for this, and I believe that some HR managers may look down on me for having it on my LinkedIn. It has been off of my resume for a while now and is unrelated to the work I do now. Should I just leave it off my LinkedIn? I have noticed that a good amount of people (especially in their 20s) still have a lot of these old/ unrelated experiences laying around on their LinkedIn. Or is it important to show all your experiences here? To get a better idea of career progression. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
I definitely would not have your NWM on your LinkedIn haha
They’re just either lazy or don’t pay much attention to their LinkedIn, don’t think too much into it, and definitely dear god do not have NWM on there haha
remove that garbage asap
LinkedIn is a social media site. You share what you choose to share. Your resume though is different. It's the basis for a legal employment contract. Leave it on resume, remove it on LinkedIn (provided you are not deliberately using the LinkedIn omission to mislead a hiring manager you are talking to).
Disagree. You have no obligation to put it on your resume. By that same logic, am I required to list the waiter job I had at IHOP during high school? The only obligation is when you fill out a background check.
I guess you can choose to present selective info on resume. It can amount to misrepresentation at some point but we obviously see this differently.
This is so funny - I also did NWM internship my sophomore year because I had no other prospects, and I did remove it from my LinkedIn and resume. Too embarrassing to willingly present to the world.
Fwiw, I made a late switch to IB recruiting and a NWM internship was my most recent and relevant (lol) internship. Still landed a role even with it as the first item in the experience section.
You definitely shouldn’t have it on your LinkedIn if you have any sort of relevant experience to the industry you want to be in.
Also, regarding your resume, you don’t need it on there unless you have trouble filling the page with good experience. It is however necessary for you to include it if an employer wants you to list all of your employment going back to year 20XX if you worked for NWM after that year. Don’t sweat it too much though man - no one is ever going to ask about it
